Cycling to Work: A Passion for an Active Life

Dr. Pulak Parag cycling to work

Cycling has been part of my life for more than 11 years. During this time, I have ridden more than 100,000 recorded kilometres, completed several long-distance brevets and three Super Randonneur (SR) rides. One of my memorable cycling journeys has been the Manali-Leh-Khardung La route.

I ride to work regularly, through all seasons, and use the car for my work commute much less often. I also combine cycling with my morning workouts. For me, staying active is about making movement a natural part of everyday life.

Why I Cycle

For me, cycling is more than a form of exercise. Cycling to work helps me navigate traffic, stay physically active and start the day with some time outdoors. It is also a simple way of reducing the environmental impact of my daily commute. Over the years, cycling has become a part of my routine rather than something I have to make time for.

Ride to Work (R2W)

Riding to work has become my way of incorporating movement into an otherwise busy working day. Instead of treating exercise as something separate from daily life, R2W makes the commute itself part of an active routine. It is also a chance to begin the day outdoors and arrive at work refreshed.

Long-Distance Cycling & Brevets

Over the years, cycling has taken me well beyond my daily commute. Long-distance brevets have been an important part of that journey, teaching me patience, preparation and consistency. One particularly memorable experience was riding the Manali-Leh-Khardung La route. For me, these longer rides are as much about the journey and the experience as they are about the distance.

Cycling, Fitness & Discipline

Cycling is one part of my approach to staying active. I also make time for morning workouts, and I find that the combination of regular exercise and cycling helps me maintain fitness alongside a busy professional life. The consistency required for cycling has also taught me that fitness is built through regular habits rather than occasional effort.

Choosing the Bicycle

Cycling should not be seen as something we do only when we cannot afford or do not have access to a car. Choosing the bicycle can be a matter of pride- a conscious choice to stay active, navigate our cities differently and make a small contribution to the environment. For me, riding to work is something I take pride in, and I hope more people will see cycling as a positive and enjoyable way of living.
